Bicycle traffic rules will be stricter starting from November.

1. Please pay attention to smartphone use when riding your bike.

(The following is prohibited)

• Do not make phone calls with your smartphone in hand while riding your bike.
• Do not play with your smartphone or check emails while riding your bike.

*If you wish to do anything with your smartphone, be sure to stop your bike.

Violators will be arrested by the police.

Afterwards violators will be jailed for up to six months or fined up to ￥100,000.

If an accident occurs the violator will be arrested by the police.

Afterwards violators will be jailed for up to 1 year or fined up to ￥300,000.

2. Drinking and riding a bike or lending a bike to someone who is under the influence is prohibited.

(The following is prohibited)

• You must not drink and ride your bike.
• You must not give alcohol to people who are riding a bike.
• You must not lend a bike to people who are under the influence.

[Punishment details]

Individuals who ride a bike under the influence and the person who lent the bike to them will be arrested by the police.

Afterwards violators will be jailed for up to three years or fined up to ￥500,000.

Individuals who gave alcohol to people riding bicycles and people riding bicycles under the influence will be arrested by the police.

Afterwards violators will be jailed for up to two years or fined up to ￥300,000.
